"My vision is a world filled with hope. I believe that when people connect and bond, they discover something to cherish and anticipate. This belief is central to all my architectural endeavours: creating opportunities for people to interact and build meaningful connections. It's this belief that drives me to embark on a venture like DYP." - Chaula
When Chaula started her professional journey, computers had just been introduced in architectural offices, fundamentally altering documentation processes. Design offices were compelled to relearn the entire process of creating and issuing drawings. While pursuing her master's in planning, she became captivated by the concept of a "systems approach to planning." This fascination led her to view 'drawing making' as a system, prompting her to establish systems from folder organisation to drawing naming, layer systems, and pen assignments. This exposure at the onset of her career became ingrained in her working style.
Right from the initial days due to her organised way of working, Chaula became a natural choice for leading teams in the organisations she worked, leading her to further expand on adapting systems on all aspects of project delivery.
In 2010, when Riddhi joined her team, Chaula was seeking to transition to larger architectural projects. While awaiting project launches, she dedicated herself to developing systems and processes aimed at freeing her to focus on broader aspects of portfolio building, delegating day-to-day project tasks to her team. Riddhi adeptly adapted to these systems, experiencing organised working methods from the outset of her career. This early exposure to systematic thinking empowered both Riddhi and Chaula to question established norms and create processes that prioritise important tasks.
When Riddhi founded her firm in 2016, she didn't realise that these systems would form the foundation of her entrepreneurial journey, aiding her at every stage of the company's growth. As she encountered new challenges, she not only applied what she had learned from Chaula but also developed her own systems in consultation with experts. These systems have been imbibed so naturally in her that she never felt that so many designers would not have tools to organise their practice to scale and grow.
In June 2023, when Riddhi observed over 400 people interested in just one document she had drafted for her client experience journey, she realised how these resources could benefit the design community. Unsure of how to proceed, she reached out to Chaula, her mentor, as always.
They realised design firm owners face challenges because business skills aren't taught in design schools, creating a gap between education and practice - which can be filled up by sharing their knowledge. The question was: How? After extensive brainstorming, they decided to break down business systems and templates into simple, easy-to-implement components.
After more than six months of research, they found ‘Design Your Practice’ where they could share their knowledge with the fraternity, help them implement, share experiences & grow together. In short; a platform for the designers, by the designers & of the designers.
"As a single working mother of two, mastering time management was crucial. Implementing systems early on instilled independence in my children and allowed for a balanced work-life dynamic. Inspired by this, I applied a nurturing child-like approach to my business, using my problem-solving attitude ('jugaad') to create simplified systems. The result? Exponential growth. Now, I'm eager to share these insights with fellow designers to fuel their success." - Riddhi
